The twelve “London Symphonies” form the sublime final chord of Haydn's symphonic work. They were conceived for the London impresario Johann Peter Salomon, and Haydn himself directed the creations, when he visited, in 1791/1792 and 1794/1795, for some time in the English metropolis. The first performance of the Symphony in B flat major n ° 98, in 1792, was crowned with such success that the first and last movements, allegro, even had to be cut. Haydn was at the desk of this performance - as was the custom then - from his keyboard, with which he properly supported the orchestra. In the Finale of this symphony, the composer reserved, exceptionally, the occasion of a small personal solo of arpeggiated chords, which did not fail to produce its effect on the audience. The Study Edition uses the musical text of the Complete Edition of Haydn's Works and thus guarantees the highest scientific quality of publication.
