The twelve “London Symphonies” form the sublime final chord of Haydn's symphonic work. They were conceived for the London impresario Johann Peter Salomon, and Haydn himself directed the creations, when he visited, in 1791/1792 and 1794/1795, for some time in the English metropolis. Filled with energy, the Symphony in B flat major No. 102 is part of the group of the last three symphonies which were premiered in the spring of 1795. Haydn here exceptionally renounces the clarinets, which are instead found in all the other later symphonies. Exceptional is also the instrumentation of the Adagio, in which Haydn introduces trumpets and timpani, both with mutes.
