While Schumann's first composition essays in 1838/39 for this queen-chamber music discipline remained fragmented, the three String Quartets op. 41 in A minor, F major and A major were written in a single stroke between June and July 1842. During the first private executions, the audience was amazed and the compliments he received from Mendelssohn himself incited Schumann to dedicate the news works to his friend. Sure of him, he wrote to his publisher: "Believe me, I have given myself all the trouble to produce something respectable; I sometimes think I have even given the best of myself. "As everyone knows, Schumann's opus 41 is now part of the basic repertoire of any quartet musician.
